Investment Banking Job Nashville – Four MSF graduates talk about how investment banking helped them launch their careers and the different paths they took

Graduates of Vanderbilt’s Master of Science in Finance program pursue a variety of careers, but many begin with their first job in investment banking. Some students come to the program specifically to enter the IB, and some – after about two years in it – begin to take the next steps to a different path.

We spoke with four Vanderbilt MSF graduates—two who stayed at the IB and two whose career paths diverged from it—to find out what it’s really like to work in investment banking and how what they learned at MSF has impacted their careers.

Carrie Pisarczyk knew immediately after completing her bachelor’s degree in engineering that she wanted to change her career. Although she enjoyed studying business operations, a career in finance was more appealing to her.

“During my engineering internships, the operations side often involved field work in factories,” says Pisarczyk. “I was exposed to finance in some of my undergraduate classes and realized it had more potential for strategic work than many engineering positions.”

She enrolled at Vanderbilt’s MSF to bridge the knowledge between the two fields, and after graduation, she spent three years as an investment banking analyst at Lazard.

“Three years is a bit longer than a traditional IB analyst job, but I used that time to decide what I wanted to do, whether to stay in banking or try something new,” says Pisarczyk.

Pisarczyk worked on mergers and acquisitions for a mid-market group and says she enjoyed the broad scope of responsibilities at IB and seeing transactions through to completion. She later moved to private equity, but her experience at IB provided her with relationship capital and a thorough understanding of the deal process: from pitching to bringing a company to market.

Her current work involves evaluating new investment opportunities from a financial perspective and helping to manage existing portfolios.

“Private capital allowed me to combine my knowledge in the field of industrial engineering with IB experience,” says Pisarczyk. “In addition to financial analysis, I can do more with operations from a strategic perspective.”

“IB opens many doors and can be a gateway to other financial careers,” says Pisarczyk. “I learned about many other careers in finance and investing through my experience working at IB and going to industry conferences. There are many career paths in this field that are interesting but not obvious.”

Andrey Kuzmin got into finance because he wanted a career where he could make an early impact. Starting his accounting career, he quickly realized that finance was a better fit for him.

“I studied accounting and finance during my undergraduate studies, and during internships I discovered that accounting was not for me,” he says. “I wanted to do something more eventful, with more responsibility and commitment.”

Kuzmin graduated from Vanderbilt’s MS Finance program in 2017 and spent approximately 10 months in valuation services. That experience helped put him in the cruchalas later in the IB.

“It was a great job, but I wanted to focus on investment banking,” he says. “I contacted several graduates and began the recruiting process and eventually landed a job at Stephens Inc., where I still work today.”

Kuzmin says that, true to his initial ambitions, what he likes most about investment banking is the overall impact that analysts and partners can make.

“Giving advice to companies is a pretty cool aspect of IB,” says Kuzmin. “People come to you and your team for advice on strategic decisions. In many professions you don’t get that exposure early in your career.”

Kuzmin plans to stay with IB for the foreseeable future, but advises any finance professional starting out in their career to consider spending a few years at the firm.

“It’s a career that if you think you’re going to enjoy it, you should try it,” he says. “Even if you ultimately decide it’s not for you, you’ll have a lot of experience, a great network and additional mental skills like the ability to organize and the ability to work hard.”

Akapelwa joined Vanderbilt’s MS Finance program with an eye on private equity. He knew IB was the gateway to private equity and attended Vanderbilt’s MSF to gain the knowledge and contacts he needed to land a job at the firm.

“Private equity groups are recruiting from some banks,” he says. “I knew I wanted to work at certain banks, and Vanderbilt MSF had contacts there. Vandy started preparing me for interviews before I even started the program.”

Akapelwa says his three years at IB provided him with knowledge and experience that played a key role in private equity.

“About 60 percent of what you do at IB has a private equity approach,” says Akapelwa. “At IB, you get a holistic view of how the company is doing financially. You learn to think about it and appreciate it. These are good skills to understand before investing in private equity.”

The biggest difference Akapelwa sees between IB and private equity is the depth of knowledge about each company you work with. IB emphasizes making quick decisions based on a large amount of information, while private equity requires a lot of critical thinking and detail. He also says that the level of responsibility in private equity is higher.

“I look at everyone as an owner rather than whether I like them or not,” he says. “Everyone in my team has to play their part and fulfill the remaining parts of the agreement. This requires deep trust in your work. There is responsibility in banking, but you are in a team where someone else is always checking your work.

Pablo Heitman started working as an investment banker at J.P. Morgan a month after graduating from Vanderbilt’s MSF program. He also entered finance through engineering and accounting, but his main driving force was his interest in the health field.

“I knew banking would be the best experience early in my career, providing me with extensive exposure to the healthcare industry as well as an intensive course in corporate finance,” he says.

Jobs For Masters In Finance Graduates

One of the reasons Heitman chose Vanderbilt was Nashville’s reputation as a health-focused city. He spent several months prior to his MSF internship at Bailey Southwell & Co. learning about the intersection of healthcare and IB. There he discovered that what interested him most in banking was its procedural nature.

“It’s interesting to see how the merger and acquisitions process works,” he says. “This, combined with the development and provision of strategic consulting, is what I like most about banking. You know what the overall strategy, goals and objectives of the company are. You know what the investment bank can do to help execute this strategy, and you inevitably make your best recommendations to the company. The greatest minds in the industry seek this advice, and I have a front-row seat to it every day.”

Heitman says the MSF program taught him how to put thoughtful effort into his career search, which ultimately helped him better understand and appreciate IB. For him, banking will be on the cards for some time. He cautions that the IB is not for everyone, but it can provide an excellent entry point into finance.

“The IB is geared towards competitive people,” he says. “It’s a very interactive, collegial environment. If you are thinking about a career in the industry, the best thing you can do is talk to as many bankers as possible.
